“ The cube ” is a group composed by some of the best European musicians whose leader, Dado Moroni, may be considered at present as the most popular Italian pianist in the world. Tom Harrell is esteemed as one of the most important musician and composer of the recent jazz history, provided with an incomparable style . “ The cube ” musical project was born two years ago (the previous name was “ Psychodrum ” ). The starting idea was to create around Dado Moroni pianist a very strong rhythm by using two drum players, Stefano Bagnoli and Enzo Zirilli, while Andrea Dulbecco was on the vibes and Riccardo Fioravanti on the doublebass. Then the band realized that the outcome was something of unique, not only due to the fullness of the rhythm. In fact thanks to their exceptional sensitivity and expressive qualities, the musicians created a first rate sound that allowed to get more ambitious goals . All the songs, except “Streets” by Tom Harrell, are original tracks from the performers. There is also a new Tom Harrell’s song, entitled “Tom’s soul”, a real pearl destined to enter the “cult ” (o cultural?) repertoire of the contemporary music. It is a cd of unbeatable beauty.

Live at Blue Note Tokyo is a celebration of Brazilian jazz played in one of the foremost jazz clubs in the world—a gathering of old friends and the discovery of new friends, all coming together for legendary guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves. A founding father of the bossa nova musical movement, Castro-Neves became a leading figure in the genre, recording historic albums with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Dori Caymmi and Stan Getz, and touring with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Barbra Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald and countless others. On this outing, the guitarist/singer brings together percussionist Airto Moreira and vocalist Leila Pinheiro, both old friends, for an exciting collaboration with new musical partners to record a gem of Brazilian music.
The music is a compilation of performances recorded over a seven-night 2009 stretch at the Blue Note Tokyo jazz club, and features an all-star cast of Brazilian musicians playing three of Castro-Neves' own compositions, as well as songs from Jobim, Moreira, Baden Powell and others. The album was meant to capture only a snapshot of the incredible bossa music produced over the last fifty years. Needless to say, though the fourteen-piece repertoire is diverse, exciting and engaging, it in no way sufficiently documents the history of this great genre with such worldwide appeal. Nevertheless, from the strings of Castro-Neves' guitar, the lips of Pinheiro, and passionate performances from the band, Brazil comes alive with beautiful bossa melodies.
While vocals are certainly the mainstay of this disc, Castro-Neves' original, "My Sweet Sweetiepie," is a gorgeous instrumental collaboration between the leader and pianist Paulo Calasans. The guitarist opens the album with a vocal performance on the lively bossa rhythms of "Ela É Carioca," while on "Ponteio," he is joined by Pinheiro, who provides the lead vocals. There are other notable vocal performances here, including the two Jobim pieces, "Domingo Azul Do Mar/Fotographia," and "Waters of March." The brief but beautiful "Rio" and the classic Powell song, "Canto De Ossanha," are also wonderful vocal spots.
It's been said that jazz seems to be far more popular around the world than it is in the United States, with Japan listed as one country that has fully embraced the music. Audience response to this live recording confirms that the Brazilian sub-genre is just as popular. Led by guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves, one of the most important exponents of the bossa nova, Live at The Blue Note Tokyo showcases an all-star cast of players in a world-renowned setting, delivering the music of Brazil with passion and class.

French pianist Serge Delaite has entertained Japanese jazz fans over the years through his seven previous releases from Atelier Sawano. While his previous albums are all with his own trio, this special CD, a collection of songs about Paris, has an important guest, accordion player Marcel Azzola. In addition, on a few tunes we hear Hubert Delaite on guitar and vocal and Henri Wocjik on clarinet.
The proceedings have an unmistakably French mood - relaxed, elegant, light-hearted. Lots of French chansons here, but Serge Delaite and his trio make sure that it swings! A very nice French jazz album, tastefully executed.

Born and raised in Hartford, Connecticut, Dezron Douglas began playing the bass at age nine. Learning first about music in the church, he joined his father Alton Douglas's gospel quartet when he was 12. Being the nephew of legendary jazz drummer and composer Walter Bolden, Douglas was surrounded by music during most of his childhood. Graduating from the Jackie McLean Institute where he studied with Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, and McLean, he has gone on to perform and record with such jazz luminaries as Michael Carvin, Pharoah Sanders, Nicholas Payton, Joe Farnsworth, Eric Alexander, Andy Bey, Kevin Mahogany, and others.
Venus Records introduces this extremely talented jazz bassist in his debut CD Walkin' My Baby Back Home with a superb trio with Cyrus Chestnut on piano and Lewis Nashon drums. Douglas' powerful and lyrical bass playing shines on equal footing with the two masters' awesome performances. Selection of tunes and arrangements are fresh and interesting, as well. Dezron Douglas is definitely a bassist to watch!

Vladimir Shafranov Trio

Russian-born pianist Vladimir Shafranov, who was intoduced to Japanese jazz fans by Atelier Sawano in the 1990s, moved to Venus Records and delivered his first album from his new label. A long-time resident of Finland, this time Shafranov teamed up with a great American rhythm section: Peter Washington on bass and Victor Lewis on drums.
With the support of this powerful rhythm section, Shafranov dazzles with his romanticism, beautiful harmonies and driving swing. A thoroughly enjoyable piano trio album and a must-have for Shafranov fans!

Having hoisted its flag on the remarkable success of Esbjorn Svensson's EST, Siegfried Loch's ACT label might now be assumed to have a hooks-and-grooves agenda that could cramp the many other jazz talents on its books. But if ACT's artists tend to a more populist appeal than compatriot label ECM, they follow their own paths none the less. One of the company's fastest rising stars is the creative young pianist Michael Wollny, whose trio helped ACT celebrate its 10th birthday in London in May. Hexentanz ("witch dance") is Wollny's debut as an unaccompanied soloist, a programme of originals he describes as "gothic music".
Wollny immersed himself in Schubert, Steve Reich, Björk and jazz pianist Joachim Kühn as preparation, and there are two suite-like multipart pieces: one referring to Schubert's sound palette, though not his themes; the other the five-track title. A powerful sample-assisted opener is followed by a Schubertian section beginning on a gracefully sombre, spacious theme turning into skimming free-jazzy runs, accelerating rising phrases hitting big, jarring chords, slow-blooming motifs veering into flying fast figures that none the less retain the initiating shape. The title suite is played with a mix of charismatic conviction and poignancy, full of dynamic shocks building to a low-end thunder against blurted treble bursts. Björk's Where Is the Line sounds like Dancing Cheek to Cheek played by Frankenstein's monster, and the same composer's Joga sounds like early Carla Bley played by Paul Bley. Hexentanz isn't jazzy in the swing sense, but it shows the starbound Wollny using jazz sensibilities in the most creative ways.

Following the trios led by Stefano Bollani and Giovanni Guidi, Roma Trio is another splended piano trio from Italy that debuted from Venus Records. The trio consists of pianist Luca Mannutza (b. 1968), bassist Gianluca Renzi (b. 1975) and drummer Nicola Angelucci (b. 1979). They are all up and coming artists who have collectively played with Paolo Fresu, Steve Grossman, Fabrizio Bosso, Marc Johnson and Giovanni Mirabassi.
L'Appuntamento is their first new release in four years, following the 2008 album The Four Seasons. In this collection of American and Italian "standards", the trio dazzles the listener with their passionate lyricism and joyous swing.

Appassionato omaggio ad Elis Regina da parte di una delle nostre migliori interpreti della musica brasiliana. La personalità artistica di Barbara Casini è indiscutibile, così come il suo Amore per la musica brasiliana e per la lingua portoghese che, oramai è la sua seconda (o la prima) lingua.
Nelle note del booklet la stessa musicista fiorentina dice di Elis: "l'emozione sempre a fior di labbra, ti innamori dei suoi respiri, delle lacrime e dei sorrisi indovinati nel suo canto". E sono queste le sensazioni che Barbara Casini riesce a trasmettere nelle sue intepretazioni. Dodici brani che hanno segnato la breve vita della cantante brasiliana, scomparsa a soli trentasette anni, riarmonizzati ed arrangiati da Paolo Silvestri ed eseguiti da un ricco ensemble: Riccardo Luppi ai sassofoni e flauto, Marco Tamburini alla tromba e filicorno, Roberto Rossi al trombone e conchiglie, Natalio Mangalavite al pianoforte ed al rhodes, Dado Moroni al pianoforte nell'esecuzione di tre brani, Sandro Gibellini alle chitarre, Raffaello Pareti al contrabbasso ed al basso elettrico, Francesco Petreni alla batteria ed Heraldo Da Silva: pandeiro, cuica, tamborim,surdo,congas. Una cascata di sonorità che s'intrecciano intorno alla luminosa voce della leader, la cui esperienza ed abilità accende ogni brano.
Si spazia da autori come Baden Powell e Milton Nascimento a Pedro Caetano e Edo Lobo, fino a Guinga, chitarrista e compositore che ha di recente collaborato con Gabriele Mirabassi. Un repertorio brillante, che sprizza energia, ma non privo di momenti lirici e malinconici, come la splendida Ponta de Areia, introdotto da un solo di flauto di Riccardo Luppi che dimostra la sua poliedrica validità anche ai sassofoni.
Il trombone di Rossi canta e bene in Agora Tà, dialogando con la voce sorretto dall'armonia corale di batteria e percussioni e dal walking puntuale di Pareti.
L'intervento di Moroni in Corrida de Jangada, Valsarancho e Veracruz impreziosisce di profumi squisitamente jazz i tre brani.
La Casini mette tutto il suo cuore in ogni singolo brano, lo lacera ed urla tutta la sua passione ma anche sottovoce, coprendo tutte le forme vocali immaginabili, modulando i contrasti ed i cambi ritmici.
L'orchestralità delle esecuzioni è il valore aggiunto così come gli arrangiamenti di Silvestri. Ognuno dei musicisti le arricchisce di nuovi temi, di nuove sensazioni.
La storia di Elis "Furacao" viene ripercorsa con estrema professionalità e con tanta artistica devozione.

E’ appena uscito “Even If” primo lavoro discografico di Vito Favara dove il pianista castelvetranese, dopo aver vissuto a lungo tra Germania e Olanda, riesce ad esprimere al meglio, con grande maturità tecnica e compositiva, la musicalità acquisita nel corso della sua esperienza europea ed italiana.
Al suo fianco Luca Bulgarelli (contrabasso), Marcello Di Leonardo (batteria), e Daniele Tittarelli(sax), (tra i più richiesti e famosi sidemans sulla scena del jazz italiano), donano un tocco di classe assoluto alle composizioni del pianista, già intrise di una profonda sensibilità introspettiva e di una freschezza creativa che non ha nulla da invidiare alle migliori produzioni musicali del Jazz contemporaneo.
Quattro degli otto brani, infatti, che compongono il lavoro sono firmati da Vito Favara: Piece for peace, Even if (che dà nome all’album), Koln memories e Obama’s day.
Mentre l’ultimo, Tramonto, è un omaggio di Vito al grande musicista americano Ralph Towner che scrive una breve nota di presentazione dell’album all’interno del cd, distribuito dalla Wide Sound Jazz Production.
Vito Favara è nato a Firenze il 28.06.75.
Frequenta per quattro anni il Conservatorio “A. Scontrino” di Trapani. Ben presto scopre una grande passione per il jazz.
Nel 1994 partecipa al “S.Vito Jazz Festival” e vince la borsa di studio per pianoforte assegnatagli dal maestro Salvatore Bonafede.
Nel 1995 supera la prova di selezione per l’iscrizione alla HochSchule fur Musik di Colonia dove, nel 2000 consegue il diploma in “piano jazz” ad indirizzo concertistico con John Taylor.
Bill Dobbins lo sceglie come pianista della Combo e della della Big band dell’ HochSchule fur Musik di Colonia da lui dirette, con le quali nel 1998 terrà dei concerti ad Amsterdam e Bruxelles.
Dal 2002 al 2004 vive ad Amsterdam dove svolge un’intensa attività musicale in vari ambiti e generi differenti suonando sia il piano che le tastiere. Conduce, per più di un anno, con la “Kaos band”, ideata dal fratello Luciano, una jam session al “Bourbon street”(famoso locale di Amsterdam), riconosciuta e apprezzata da musicisti professionisti provenienti sia dal pop che dal jazz. Nello stesso periodo suona in diverse jazz band e gruppi di musica pop e funk sia ad Amsterdam (in locali come Steals, Meander, Korte Golf, De Kluis, Club 020) che a Colonia.
Dal settembre 2004 si trasferisce a Roma dove entra (per un breve periodo) a far parte del corpo docenti dell’ UM (Università della musica) come insegnante di piano jazz e, successivamente, della Big Band “Art of jazz” condotta da Angelo Schiavi e Claudio Pradò.
Nel mese di aprile del 2004 partecipa all’ “Emer-jazz 2004”, presso il Teatro Flaiano di Roma classificandosi al 1° posto.
Nel gennaio 2005 partecipa al “Palermo Piano Jazz Festival”, in trio con Luca Lo Bianco (contrabbasso), Fabrizio Giambanco (batteria).
Viene invitato, come vincitore della precedente edizione, a partecipare all’ “Emer-jazz festival” di Roma dove vince, per il secondo anno, il 1° premio.
Nel 2006 partecipa al concorso “Chicco Bettinardi” per nuovi talenti del jazz italiano
promosso dal “Piacenza jazz festival” dove si classifica al secondo posto delle semifinali. Alla serata finale entra nella rosa dei premiati aggiudicandosi il terzo posto.
A Roma dal 2008 Svolge attività didattica nella Scuola di musica il “Pentagramma” e suona come pianista nella Big Band diretta dal maestro Piero Quarta.
Nell’ estate del 2009 partecipa alla prima edizione del Selinunte Jazz festival esibendosi in piano solo e come ospite del quintetto di Giovanni Tommaso, “APOGEO”.


Dan Nimmer Trio
All The Things You Are

Pianist Dan Nimmer has been steadily building his career and reputation since he was recruited by Wynton Marsalis in 2004 as a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The Japanese independant jazz label Venus Records has been his steadfast supporter, ever since it released Nimmer's first CD in 2007.
His latest release from Venus Records is another winning trio date, with his contemporary band mates David Wong on bass and Pete Van Nostrand on drums. Throughout the program of well-known standards, Nimmer entertains the listener with joyous swing and clever arrangements. Informed by Wynton Kelly, Red Garland, Erroll Garner and Ahmad Jamal, Nimmer's sensibilities are definitely traditional and straight ahead. His touch is clean and strong, and as he shows again in this CD, imaginative playing and the ability to "tell a story" with his well-structured solos are his strengths.
Recommended to fans of straight-ahead piano trio music!

While the vast majority of my Italian is not suitable for print and has little if anything to do with the global influence of music, Italy and Viaveneto Jazz continues to be a variable sonic gold mine. While referring to themselves as a small label in Italy they continue to amaze with what would be considered major label quality here in the States and Agora Ta is certainly no exception.
Agora Ta is the cultural end result of a CD tribute to the great if not often over looked Brazilian singer Elis Regina carried out by Barbara Casini who is by far the most acclaimed interpreter of Brazilian music in Italy. Arrangement of this ensemble which takes its musical happy place somewhere between big band and small modern orchestra and handled with great care by Paolo Silvestru. There are some new tunes featured with this release so it is far from what one would consider a re-issue. One such tune and perhaps the highlight of this stellar recording is that of Italian trumpet master Enrico Rava's "Cidade do Amor Demais." Rava brings his own riff with a Miles Davis like bent for composition adding flavor and texture galore.
The remaining tunes are revisited but reinvented with pop and vitality for a jazz orchestra who has obviously been around the block a time or two. When any form of reharmonization of a tune takes places there are two main components for success which are authenticity and attitude. Agora Taremains faithful to the "seventies" dynamic of the prior work while inventing that third A - attitude. While the small orchestra has their parts down cold, Casini plays the role of musical chameleon moving effortlessly from brilliant and aggressive to lyrical magic without stripping the listeners musical transmission. A exquisite take on the more traditional jazz cannon found in the United States is pulled off with sheer perfection if the Carey and Fischer ballad "You've Changed."
On a global scale, music that transcends genres and continents. A brilliant work!
