The pianist, composer and educator Geri Allen died today in Philadelphia, WBGO reports. The cause was cancer. Allen, 60, generally regarded as one of jazz’s finest pianists and most important woman musicians, recorded with leaders including Ornette Coleman, Steve Coleman, Charles Lloyd, Paul Motian and Charlie Haden, in addition to releasing many essential sessions under her own name.
